Materials

  • Gold bead Gold bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Goose biots (tail) Brown goose biots (2, splayed)
  • Oval tinsel rib Gold oval tinsel (1 length)
  • Peacock herl (body) Natural peacock herl (3-4 strands)
  • Poly yarn (wings) White poly yarn (small clump)
  • Hen hackle (collar) Brown hen hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a gold bead to the eye and start thread behind it.
  2. Tie in two brown goose biots at the bend, splayed into a short forked tail about one-third shank past the bend.
  3. Catch in gold oval tinsel and 3-4 strands of peacock herl.
  4. Twist the herl into a rope and wrap a full body up to the bead, then tie off.
  5. Counter-wrap the tinsel forward in 4-5 open turns and secure.
  6. Wrap a soft brown hen hackle collar behind the bead and sweep the fibres back.
  7. Tie a small clump of white poly yarn flat across the top as two swept-back wings, splitting them into a shallow V, and trim to about shank length.
  8. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
