Mount a Stealth Hook D16 in the vice and start the thread about one hook-eye's width behind the eye.
Wrap back to the halfway point of the shank and then forward again to halfway, trimming out the tag end, the doubled wraps are there to start the taper.
Tie in the Semperfli Floating Poly Yarn on top of the shank with a pinch wrap, bringing the thread up between your fingers and down the far side, leaving yourself a little space behind the eye.
Take the yarn one full turn backwards first with no thread underneath, then wrap forward, easing the tension off progressively as you go, the loosening wraps build a tapered body naturally.
Tie the yarn off with a wrap over the top, a couple of pinch wraps underneath and one more turn over, then wrap the thread backwards so you leave a bare gap about the length of the hook eye, and trim the yarn out on top.
Take a pencil-thickness pinch of bleached select cow elk and pick out the underfur and short fibres with your fingers, keeping the thicker hairs. They are more hollow and float better.
Stack the hair, inspect it and pull out any butt end that has crept in, then restack so the tips are level.
Measure the wing a shade longer than the hook bend, because it shortens as it fans, and hold it with two snug, not tight, wraps.
On the third wrap pull up and over to flare the hair on the eye side, then pull a small clump back and take a wrap in between it, repeating three or four times so the wing splits into clumps rather than one bunch.
Build a small thread dam in front to pinch all those wraps together, sort the butt ends forward and the tips back, and lock everything down with a wrap over the top.
Flatten the butt ends between your fingers so they are spread and not clumped, then trim them at a 45 degree angle and take out any straggler.
Whip finish three turns, deliberately finishing with the thread on top of the fly.
Spread the wing with your thumb into a fan, shifting hairs to the sides as needed, then push back down through the middle so it settles fanned.
Run Solarez Bone Dry down the sides and a little heavier over the top, never underneath, where it always finds the hook eye, so it soaks down to the poly yarn tie-off point and holds the elk fanned out.
