  • Hook curved caddis/scud nymph hook, 10-14
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Tungsten bead Gold or copper slotted tungsten bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Lead-free wire underbody Natural lead wire (10-12 turns)
  • Body dubbing Olive or Tan (Hare's Ear) (small amount)
  • Thin skin / scud back Clear or amber scud back stretch plastic (1 strip)
  • Wire rib Gold wire (1 length)
  • Hotspot thread collar Fluorescent orange thread (few wraps)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the tungsten bead to the eye, then wrap 10-12 turns of lead-free wire behind it to load the anchor with weight and shove the wraps up into the bead.
  2. Start thread behind the wire and lay a base back to the bend.
  3. Tie in a strip of thin skin (scud back) and the gold wire at the bend.
  4. Dub a fat, tapered abdomen forward two-thirds of the shank; keep the belly full so the fly rolls hook-point-up on the drift.
  5. Pull the thin skin over the back as a shell and bind it behind the bead.
  6. Counter-wrap the gold wire forward in 5-6 open turns to segment the body and lock the shellback, then helicopter off the tag.
  7. Wrap a short fluorescent-orange thread collar behind the bead as a hotspot, whip finish, and glaze the shellback and collar with UV resin.
