Thread Chartreuse body thread, black for the head 8/0 (Danville Vivus)
Materials
Oval tinsel (tag and rib) Gold oval tinsel (Small, one piece used for both)
Crystal Flash (tail) Pearl flashabou (Small bunch)
Uni floss (body) Chartreuse (light green in the original) (As needed)
Squirrel tail (wing) Black (goat hair in the original) (Stacked clump, hook length)
Hackle (collar) Chartreuse (yellow in the original) (1 feather)
How to tie it
Start with chartreuse thread rather than black. It keeps the body bright and stops the dark thread bleeding through the floss.
Tag: tie in the small oval gold tinsel at the rear, take a few wraps to form a short tag, then fold the tinsel back, take one wrap over it and clip the remaining tinsel into a material keeper. The same piece will become the rib.
Tail: tie in a small bunch of Crystal Flash on top of the shank, winding back to the tag, and trim the butts.
Body: run the thread forward to where the butt bump ends and tie the chartreuse floss in there. Wrap the floss back to fill that space first, come forward, then make a second pass over the bump and back so the body ends up smooth. Take care not to move the tail.
Rib: spiral the oval gold tinsel forward over the floss in even turns and tie it off at the front.
Wing: stack a clump of black squirrel and tie it in fairly short, about the length of the hook. Squirrel is slippery, so crank the thread down hard.
Take a couple of half hitches with the chartreuse thread to hold everything, then cut it off and start black thread at the head. Starting black earlier would leave a dark gap behind the collar.
Collar: tie in the chartreuse hackle and take one wrap before you start folding and stroking the fibers back. The quills are delicate and that first wrap gives you control. Wrap the collar, tie off and trim.
Build a small black head, whip finish and finish with UV resin.
