Reference Recipe

  • Hook Jig hook, 60-degree eye (barbless), 8-12
  • Thread Olive 8/0

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Black bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Lead wire n/a (a few turns)
  • Squirrel zonker or tail fibers Olive / natural squirrel zonker or tail fibers (small clump)
  • Simi Seal / dubbing (body) Dark olive-brown simi seal dubbing (pinch)
  • Ripple Ice Dub (thorax/flash) Peacock / UV ripple ice dub (pinch)
  • Hen back or India hen (collar) Olive brahma hen fibers (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the slotted black bead at the eye, add a few turns of lead behind it and shove them into the slot, then start the thread.
  2. Tie in a short squirrel or soft-fiber tail at the bend, about half a shank long, for movement.
  3. Dub a shaggy dark olive-brown body forward to the 70% mark, keeping it buggy and picked-out.
  4. Dub a fuller UV/peacock thorax band behind the bead.
  5. Tie in an olive hen feather by the tip and take one or two turns as a soft-hackle collar, then sweep the fibers back and bind.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and add a drop of cement; pick out the body dubbing so it breathes in the water.
