  • Hook 2XL dry-fly hook, 8-12
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Black elk or deer hair (tail) Black-dyed elk hair (small clump)
  • Dubbing or peacock herl (body) Black ostrich or peacock herl (pinch / 2 strands)
  • Calf body hair (wing post) White (hi-viz) (small clump)
  • Grizzly hackle Grizzly or black hackle (1 feather)
  • Black elk hair (overwing) Black-dyed elk hair (small clump)
  • Round rubber legs Black ostrich herl (2 pairs)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and tie in a short black elk-hair tail, about half a shank long.
  2. Dub or wrap a black body forward to the 65% mark.
  3. Stand a white calf-hair post upright at the 65% mark and lock its base with thread.
  4. Tie in the hackle at the base of the post.
  5. Tie in a black elk-hair overwing slanting forward, Trude style, to the tail.
  6. Wind the hackle parachute-style around the post 4-6 turns and tie off.
  7. Figure-8 black rubber legs to each side, whip finish and cement.
