Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1XL nymph / standard nymph hook, 16-18
  • Thread Brown or pale yellow 8/0

Materials

  • Bead (optional) Gold or copper slotted tungsten bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Pheasant tail or hackle fibers (tail) Brown hackle fibers (3-4 fibers)
  • Dubbing (abdomen) Pale amber / olive-tan dubbing (pinch)
  • Ultra wire (rib) Copper wire (1 strand, small)
  • Thin Skin or pheasant (wingcase) Brown pheasant tail fibers (1 strip)
  • Hare dubbing (thorax) Amber-brown hare dubbing (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. If using a bead, slide it to the eye; start the thread and lay a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in three or four brown fibers for a short tail, about half a shank long.
  3. Catch in the copper wire, then dub a slim tapered amber abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  4. Rib the wire forward in 5 evenly spaced turns and helicopter it off.
  5. Bind in a wingcase strip, then dub a fuller thorax over the front third.
  6. Pull the wingcase forward over the thorax, bind it behind the eye or bead, and pick out the thorax dubbing for legs.
  7. Whip finish and add a drop of cement.
