Classic Recipe

  • Hook 4x streamer, 2-6
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Body Gold tinsel or floss (slim)
  • Wing Brown-dyed grizzly hackles (2 pairs, splayed)
  • Collar Brown schlappen, long (full, webby)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the 4x streamer hook and start black thread. Wrap a slim gold tinsel or floss body from bend to thorax.
  2. Select two pairs of brown-dyed grizzly hackles and pair them curve-to-curve so they splay outward.
  3. Tie the splayed hackle pairs in at the front of the body as a wing. The splay is what makes the fly pulse and breathe.
  4. Tie in a long, webby brown schlappen feather by the tip.
  5. Take several turns of the schlappen as an oversized collar, sweeping the fibers back so they envelop the wing.
  6. Form a small head, whip finish and cement.
