Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Dry fly hook (Demmon Supreme Competition D201 BL), #12
  • Thread Brown or tan to match the dubbing 50 denier

Materials

  • CDC feathers (bubble wing) Natural mallard CDC (2 feathers)
  • Saddle hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather)
  • Flash dubbing (body) Light flash dubbing (One small noodle)
  • Partridge feather (detail/legs) Natural partridge (1 feather)
  • Hare's mask dubbing (head) Natural light hare s mask dubbing (Generous pinch, long fibers)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread at the front of the shank, leaving room for a bulky dubbed head.
  2. Wing: stroke two CDC feathers so the fibers align, catch them in with a loose wrap while keeping tension on them, then bind the stems down all the way to the back of the shank so the feathers lie along the top of the fly.
  3. Tie in the grizzly hackle at the rear alongside the CDC.
  4. Body: spin a small, fairly slim noodle of light flash dubbing and wrap it forward, stopping where the CDC was tied in and leaving bare shank at the front.
  5. Tap the body lightly with a dubbing brush to pull a few fibers out and make it look buggy.
  6. Palmer the grizzly hackle forward over the body, tie it off and trim, then cut the hackle fibers off flush across the top so only the side fibers remain. This makes the fly float low.
  7. Draw the CDC feathers back over the top of the body to form a domed bubble wing, hold tension while you set the shape, then tie them down in front of the body and trim the excess.
  8. Tie in a partridge feather at the front as a detail and take a turn or two so the speckled fibers sweep back over the wing.
  9. Head: dub a generous, shaggy noodle of light hare's mask, long fibers are what you want, and build a fat buggy head. Whip finish.
  10. Brush the head out with a dubbing brush to free the long fibers, then trim the fibers underneath the fly flat so it sits low and shows its abdomen.
