Reference Recipe

  • Hook Barbless jig hook, 60-degree eye, 14-18
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Gold or silver slotted tungsten bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Fluoro floss or Glo-Brite (tag) Fluorescent pink fluoro floss or glo brite (short length)
  • Pheasant tail fibers (body) Natural pheasant tail fibers (4-6 fibers)
  • Ultra wire (rib) Copper wire (1 strand, small)
  • Peacock herl or hare (thorax) Natural peacock herl (1-2 strands / pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the slotted bead at the eye, start the thread and run a smooth base to a point above the barbless point.
  2. Tie in a short fluorescent pink tag and wrap it into a bright ball at the rear, then bind and trim.
  3. Catch in the copper wire, then bind pheasant tail fibers by the tips and wrap them forward to the 60% mark as the abdomen.
  4. Rib the copper wire forward in 5 open counter-turns for durability and helicopter it off.
  5. Twist peacock herl (or a pinch of hare) into the thread and build a compact thorax up to the bead.
  6. Whip finish tight behind the bead and add a drop of cement.
