Pink Squirrel

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 4 versions

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Scud or nymph hook, 12-16
  • Thread Red 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Gold tungsten bead (1)
  • Tail Pearl Krystal Flash (3-4 strands)
  • Body Gray squirrel + Antron blend (rough)
  • Rib Red wire (spiral)
  • Collar Fl. pink dubbing (ball)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a gold tungsten bead to the eye and mount the scud/nymph hook. Start red thread behind the bead.
  2. Tie in 3-4 strands of pearl Krystal Flash at the bend for a short tail, about half a shank long.
  3. Bind in a length of red wire, then dub a rough gray-squirrel-and-Antron body forward to the thorax, leaving room for the collar.
  4. Spiral the red wire forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns and helicopter it off.
  5. Dub a bright fluorescent-pink collar as a ball right behind the bead. This is the trigger.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.

Substitutions

  • Thorax instead of Pink Ice Dub: Fluorescent pink dubbing — Same hot-spot effect; Red Ice Dub — Alternate trigger color
  • Rib instead of Pearl tinsel: Silver wire — More durable rib; Opal Mirage tinsel — Color-shifting flash
