Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 12-16
  • Thread Pink 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Ginger fibers (bunch)
  • Body Pale pink floss (slim)
  • Rib Gold tinsel (fine)
  • Wing Gray duck quill (upright)
  • Hackle Ginger hackle (collar)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the dry hook and start pink thread. Tie in a divided pair of upright gray duck-quill wings at the thorax and set them standing.
  2. Wrap back to the bend and tie in a bunch of ginger fibers for the tail, about one shank long.
  3. Bind in a strand of fine gold tinsel, then wrap a slim pale-pink floss body forward to just behind the wings.
  4. Spiral the gold tinsel forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns for a rib and tie off.
  5. Tie in a ginger hackle and take several turns as a collar, both in front of and behind the wings.
  6. Form a small head, whip finish and cement.
