Materials
Tungsten cone (head) Gold bead (1, medium)
Pine squirrel zonker strip (tail and body) Crawfish orange (One strip, about 3-4 inches)
How to tie it
Slide the gold tungsten cone onto the hook, small end first, and mount the hook.
Start the thread behind the cone and build up a ball of wraps until the cone will not slide back down the shank, but stop while the cone still has a tiny bit of play, so it rattles when the fly is stripped.
Take the thread back to the bend. Wet your fingers and part the hair on the pine squirrel strip where you want to tie in, so you are binding the hide and not burying hair.
Tail: set the strip so the tail extends a short way past the bend. Do not overdo it, a long tail will wrap around the hook in the cast. Take three good wraps through the parted hair and a couple more behind the tie-in point, then pull the tail back to check the length.
Pull the strip forward out of the way, take the thread to the front, and palmer the zonker strip up the shank in touching turns. It will flatten out naturally, stroking the fur back as you go until you are right behind the cone.
Tie the strip off behind the cone, trim the excess, whip finish and cut the thread. Do not put any glue on it. The head needs to stay loose enough to rattle.
