Reference Recipe

  • Hook Popper / stinger-style hook, 2/0
  • Thread Yellow 3/0 or GSP

Materials

  • Tail Yellow/pineapple (bucktail + flash)
  • Splayed hackle Yellow hackle (2-4 saddles)
  • Collar hackle Yellow hackle (1 palmered saddle)
  • Body Yellow fettuccine foam (stacked strips)
  • Eyes 3D stick-on (1 pair, large)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base at the bend. Tie in a bucktail tail about one-and-a-half shank lengths long with several strands of flash.
  2. Frame the tail with 2-4 splayed saddle hackles, curves out.
  3. Palmer a saddle hackle collar in front of the tail and stroke the fibers back.
  4. Bind and stack strips of yellow fettuccine foam along the shank, compressing each with tight wraps to build a fat, buoyant body forward.
  5. Shape the front of the foam into a cupped, angled popping face so it throws water and pushes a wake.
  6. Glue large 3D eyes to the sides of the head, trim the body to a tapered grenade shape, whip finish and seal the tie-down wraps with cement.
