Materials

  • Tail Brown hackle fibers (short)
  • Body Peacock herl (3-4 strands)
  • Rib Fine gold wire (4 inches)
  • Hackle Brown hackle (palmered)
  • Head Peacock herl (2-3 wraps)
  • Wing Gray squirrel tail (sparse)

How to tie it

  1. Mount hook, tie in a short brown hackle fiber tail at the bend. About half a shank length.
  2. Tie in 4 inches of fine gold wire for the rib and a brown hackle feather by the tip at the bend.
  3. Tie in 3-4 peacock herls, twist them into a rope, and wrap forward to the 70% mark. Touching turns for a full, iridescent body.
  4. Palmer the brown hackle forward through the body in 4-5 open spiral turns. Counter-wrap the gold wire rib, lashing the hackle stem at each turn for durability.
  5. Tie in a sparse gray squirrel tail wing over the body, tips extending to the tail. Just a thin veil of hair, not a thick clump.
  6. Wrap 2-3 turns of peacock herl at the head for a dark, buggy collar.
  7. Whip finish.
