How to tie it
Start black thread on the Daiichi 1120 and run it back to the bend, then tie in a strand of brown holographic Flashabou followed by four or five pheasant tail fibers at the same point. Anchoring both together at the rear keeps a lump from forming where the body starts.
Wind the pheasant tail forward in touching turns to about the 75% mark to build the abdomen, tie it off and trim. The natural taper in the fibers does most of the body shaping for you.
Counter-wrap the brown holographic Flashabou forward over the abdomen as an open-spiral rib. Reversing direction means the rib crosses the pheasant tail rather than sinking into it, so it both segments and armours a fragile body.
Tie in a second bunch of pheasant tail fibers at the 75% mark pointing to the rear for the wing case, then dub a short, slightly fat thorax of Canadian black Simi Seal in front of them.
Tie a strand of Uni-Stretch in right behind the hook eye for the gills so a tuft sits on each side of the shank. That pale front end is what reads as a real pupa hanging under an indicator.
Pull the wing case forward over the thorax, tie it down and whip finish. Rotate the hook in the vise before whip finishing to keep the head clean, then trim the gills short and brush the Simi Seal out so it breathes.
