Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry/terrestrial hook, 8-12
  • Thread tan 6/0

Materials

  • Closed-cell foam sheet (body) Tan fly tying foam (1 strip)
  • Closed-cell foam sheet (underbody) Yellow mm foam (1 strip)
  • Deer or elk hair (underwing) Natural deer hair (small clump)
  • Poly yarn / Web wing Tan/mottled yarn (small bunch)
  • Rubber legs Barred tan rubber legs (2 pairs)
  • Hi-vis foam or yarn indicator Orange poly yarn (small tab)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and bind a tan foam strip at the bend, leaving the long tag to fold forward for the oversized abdomen.
  2. Add a yellow foam accent underneath, then a sparse deer-hair underwing to the bend.
  3. Lay a mottled poly overwing tent-style over the body, tips just past the bend.
  4. Fold the tan foam forward to form a fat, buoyant back and cinch it with two thread segments, building a plump rear and a thorax.
  5. Cinch a barred rubber leg on each side at both segments so they kick out.
  6. Tie a small orange foam sight tab upright at the head, whip finish under it, snip, and add head cement.
