Materials

  • Tail (golden pheasant tail fibers)
  • Body Natural case (1 stripped peacock quill)
  • Wing case (golden pheasant tail fibers)
  • Thorax Natural case (peacock herl)
  • Hackle (Whiting hen saddle feather, 1-2.5 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Start black thread on the Ahrex FW562 and tie in golden pheasant tail fibers for the tail.
  2. Wind the stripped peacock quill forward, keeping the turns tight at the rear and opening small gaps between them as you move forward. That widening gap is what gives the abdomen its graduated segmentation.
  3. Stop the quill at the 75% mark and tie it off, then tie a bunch of golden pheasant tail fibers in there pointing rearward for the wing case.
  4. Wrap peacock herl in front of the wing case tie-in to build the thorax and tie it off.
  5. Add one to two and a half turns of a Whiting hen saddle feather for legs. Two turns is plenty. The point is bugginess at the front end, not a dense hackle.
  6. Separate the hen fibers, pull the golden pheasant wing case over the top, tie it off, trim, clean up the head and glue the wraps.
