How to tie it
Trim an eighth to a quarter inch off the butt of the pre-formed extended body, then thread the hook point a short way into the foam body and set the hook in the vise.
Start the 6/0 thread in the middle of the shank and wrap a small ball of dubbing there, then saturate it with super glue.
Slide the extended body up onto the wet dubbing ball and lash it down snugly on top of the shank, done right the tapered body will not twist and the fly will ride correctly.
Wing: clean the underfur and short hairs out of a pencil-sized clump of deer hair and stack it. Measure it to the end of the body (not counting the biots), make two loose wraps at the tie-in point, advance and take a few loose wraps in front of the hair, then come back to the original point and cinch down hard. The front wraps keep the tips from flaring. Trim the butts square and cover them.
Split the wing into two even halves: rub a finger back and forth across the hair until it separates, then pull one bunch to each side. Lock them apart with two figure-eight wraps of dubbing on one side and two on the other.
Pull the wings back, wrap over the dubbing, and tie one full CDC feather on top of each half of the deer hair wing. Messy and buggy is fine, the CDC is there for movement.
Whip finish the 6/0 and cut it off, then attach GSP thread so you can pull hard enough for a bullet head.
Clean and stack a clump of bass bug deer hair about four times the size of the wing clump, keeping the tips pointing forward. Measure the tips to about the length of the whole body, pinch it on top of the bare shank in front of the wing, take two loose wraps and pull straight down to flare it, then two or three wraps forward toward the eye and back to the tie-in point to distribute the hair around the shank. Trim the butts.
Fill the gap between the head and the body with a little dubbing so the bullet-head tie-down cannot slip back, then advance the thread to the base of the wings.
Sweep all the hair back over the eye to form the bullet head and cinch it down hard with the GSP at the base of the wings. Trim any unstacked stragglers, whip finish and cut the GSP.
Reattach the 6/0 thread to cover the white GSP wraps, trim the hair flat on the underside of the head, tie a pair of rubber legs along each side, whip finish and cement.
