Reference Recipe

  • Hook saltwater flats hook, 2-6
  • Thread tan 140 denier

Materials

  • Bead-chain or dumbbell eyes Silver bead chain eyes medium (1 pair)
  • Bucktail or craft fur (tail/antennae) Tan bucktail (small clump)
  • Krystal Flash Pearl flashabou (few strands)
  • Monofilament (shell back) Clear scud back thin skin (1 strip)
  • Dubbing (body) Tan/shrimp (as needed)
  • Palmer hackle Ginger hackle (1)

How to tie it

  1. Lash bead-chain or dumbbell eyes near the hook eye so the fly rides point-up over the flats.
  2. At the bend, tie in a sparse tan bucktail tail with a few strands of pearl flash for the antennae, about one shank long.
  3. Bind a length of clear mono at the bend to fold forward later as the translucent shell back.
  4. Dub a tapered shrimp body forward and palmer a ginger hackle through it, then sweep the fibers down as legs.
  5. Pull the mono shell over the back, cinch behind the eyes, and figure-eight around them.
  6. Whip finish at the eye, snip, and add a drop of head cement.
