Reference Recipe

  • Hook saltwater flats hook, 1-4
  • Thread tan 140 denier

Materials

  • Lead or brass dumbbell eyes Plain (1 pair)
  • Tan/cream yarn or EP fibers (carapace) Tan craft fur (as needed)
  • Rubber legs Barred tan/orange rubber legs (3 pairs)
  • Grizzly hackle tips or craft fur (claws) Tan hackle (2)
  • Krystal Flash Pearl flashabou (few strands)
  • Weedguard mono Clear weed guard (1)

How to tie it

  1. Lash the dumbbell eyes on top of the shank near the bend so the finished crab rides point-up.
  2. At the bend (which becomes the back of the crab), tie in two splayed claws of hackle tips or craft fur with a few strands of pearl flash between them.
  3. Build a flat, round carapace by tying in yarn or EP fiber bunches figure-eight style across the shank and trimming to a coin-shaped disc.
  4. Work forward adding three pairs of rubber legs, cinching each across the shank so they stick out sideways.
  5. Finish the body up to behind the eyes, keeping the profile flat and crab-like.
  6. Tie in a mono weedguard loop at the eye, whip finish, snip, and add head cement.
