Pellet Fly-FM

Nymph · Trout · Panfish · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Wide-gap scud / grub hook, 10-16
  • Thread Brown 6/0

Materials

  • Deer or elk hair Natural brown/tan deer belly hair (spun body)
  • Foam (alternative body) Brown thin foam (cylinder, optional)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and build a small thread dam at the bend to stop the hair from sliding back.
  2. Cut, clean and stack a clump of brown deer hair, hold it on top of the shank and spin it so it flares fully around the hook.
  3. Pack the flared hair back tight with your fingers or a hair packer.
  4. Add and spin 2-3 more clumps, packing each one firmly until the shank is full and dense.
  5. Whip finish behind the eye and remove the fly from the vise.
  6. Trim the spun hair into a round, compact pellet ball, cleaning the hair away at the eye and bend so it sits like a trout-food pellet.
