Nymph · Trout · Panfish · Intermediate · 1 version
Reference Recipe
- Hook Wide-gap scud / grub hook, 10-16
- Thread Brown 6/0
Materials
- Deer or elk hair Natural brown/tan deer belly hair (spun body)
- Foam (alternative body) Brown thin foam (cylinder, optional)
How to tie it
- Start the thread and build a small thread dam at the bend to stop the hair from sliding back.
- Cut, clean and stack a clump of brown deer hair, hold it on top of the shank and spin it so it flares fully around the hook.
- Pack the flared hair back tight with your fingers or a hair packer.
- Add and spin 2-3 more clumps, packing each one firmly until the shank is full and dense.
- Whip finish behind the eye and remove the fly from the vise.
- Trim the spun hair into a round, compact pellet ball, cleaning the hair away at the eye and bend so it sits like a trout-food pellet.
