Materials

  • Peacock herl Natural peacock herl (body and thorax)
  • Copper wire Copper wire (small, rib)
  • Partridge or hen hackle Brown/grey soft hackle (1, collar)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread at the eye and wrap to the bend, catching in a strand of copper wire.
  2. Twist 3-4 strands of peacock herl into a rope and wind forward to the 70% mark for a fat, iridescent abdomen.
  3. Counter-wrap the copper wire forward in 4-5 turns to protect the herl, then break off the tag.
  4. Tie in a partridge or hen feather by the tip, shiny side forward, and strip the fuzzy base.
  5. Wind 2 turns of herl for a thorax bump, then take 2 turns of the soft hackle, sweeping fibers rearward to the hook point.
  6. Form a small head, whip finish and cement.
