Materials
Tungsten or brass bead Gold bead (2.8mm, sized to hook)
Lead-free wire - (0.015, about 4 wraps)
Peacock herl (body and thorax) Natural peacock herl (2 strands)
Partridge feather (legs) Natural brown partridge (1 feather tip)
How to tie it
Slide the gold bead onto the scud hook, then take about four wraps of 0.015 wire and jam them up into the back of the bead to lock it in place.
Start the black thread behind the wire, take a few wraps up against it to secure everything, then run a thread base back past the bend. The herl will cover any step-down.
Break the brittle first inch or two off two strands of peacock herl and tie them in at the rear. Park the thread at the 2/3 point with a half hitch.
Wrap both herls forward together, one wrap in front of the last, keeping the rear of the body slim, and tie them off at the 2/3 point. Do not cut them. Set them aside for the thorax.
Legs: cut a V out of the tip of a partridge feather and lay it against the near side of the hook. Take one loose-medium wrap, then a second, adjusting so the fibers end up splayed as legs on both sides of the fly rather than as a throat.
Lock the partridge in and trim the butt, burying the stub with a few wraps.
Pick the two peacock herls back up and wrap the thorax. Start the first wrap slightly over the partridge tie-in to hide your thread, then three or four wraps forward to the back of the bead. Tie off and trim.
Take a four-turn whip finish right behind the bead and cut the thread.
