Reference Recipe

  • Hook Straight-eye dry/nymph hook (TMC 2312), tied as a chironomid bomber, 10-12
  • Thread Black 70 denier

Materials

  • Tungsten bead Nickel/silver tungsten bead (7/64")
  • Holographic tinsel, medium (body) Red holographic tinsel (1 strand)
  • Holographic tinsel, medium (body) Blue flashabou (1 strand)
  • Wire, small (rib) Silver wire (1 length)
  • UV resin (finish) Clear uv resin (thin coat)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the nickel tungsten bead onto the hook, secure it in the vise, start the black thread, and build a tapered thread body from the head down into the bend.
  2. Tie in small silver wire at the bead and bind it down the near side to the bend for the rib.
  3. Wrap the thread back up to continue the taper, then tie in red holographic tinsel at the bend.
  4. Wrap the red tinsel forward in touching, slightly overlapping turns over the rear third; tie off and trim.
  5. Tie in blue holographic tinsel and wrap it forward to the bead, continuing the tapered body; tie off and trim.
  6. Take one turn of the silver wire at the butt under the red, then spiral it forward in evenly spaced turns for segmentation; secure behind the bead and helicopter off.
  7. Build a smooth tapered thread shoulder and whip finish.
  8. Coat the body with thin UV resin, rotate to even it out, and cure with a UV light.
