Hook Dry fly hook (tied here on a #12, 1X long barbless), #10-14
Thread Black 12/0 (8/0 is easier)
Materials
Crystal flash (rear and front body) Pearl/rainbow (4 strands)
Floss (mid body) Red floss (6-8 inches)
Calf tail (wing) White calf body hair (Sparse to medium clump)
Dry fly rooster hackle Brown hackle (1 feather, sized to hook)
How to tie it
Lay a thread base back to the start of the bend.
Tie in four strands of crystal flash at the bend, twist them lightly into a rope and wrap a short rear body about three or four millimeters long. Tie off and trim.
Tie in the red floss in front of the flash, give it a clockwise spin to tighten it into a rope and wrap the middle third of the body as smoothly as you can. Tie off and trim.
Tie in a second batch of four crystal flash strands directly in front of the floss, twist and wrap another three or four millimeters, matching the rear segment. Tie off and trim.
Wing: pull the longest fibers out of a clump of white calf tail (it will not stack) and even the tips by hand. Measure it a little past the hook bend, anchor it on top with a medium pinch wrap, follow with a tighter one to keep it from spinning, then lock it in.
Bury the butts with wraps, take the thread to the eye and ramp back to make a smooth flat base for the hackle.
Tie in the brown dry fly hackle along the top of the shank and take five or six wraps forward, each turn in front of the last, then tie off and trim the tip.
Sweep the hackle back with your fingers, make room behind the eye and take a three or four turn whip finish, going slowly so you do not trap fibers.
Trim the longest calf tail fibers at the back so the wing is even, and cement the head.
