Pat's Rubber Leg Stone

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook 3XL-4XL curved nymph/stonefly hook, 4-10
  • Thread Brown 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Lead-free weighting wire Silver lead free wire (10-15 wraps (optional))
  • Variegated chenille (Girdle Bug / Speckled) Brown/black variegated chenille (1 length for full body)
  • Round rubber legs Barred brown/black rubber legs (3 pairs plus tails and antennae)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread behind the eye and wrap a smooth base to the bend.
  2. Optionally add lead-free wraps over the front two-thirds of the shank and secure.
  3. Tie in a split rubber-leg tail at the bend, one strand each side, about half a shank long.
  4. Tie in the variegated chenille at the bend.
  5. Wrap the chenille forward, pausing to tie in a pair of rubber legs at the rear, middle, and front thorax positions so legs splay out each side.
  6. Continue the chenille to just behind the eye and secure; leave room for antennae.
  7. Tie in two forward-facing rubber-leg antennae over the eye.
  8. Build a neat thread head and whip finish.
