Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly / midge hook, 18-24
  • Thread Gray 8/0

Materials

  • Zelon or Antron trailing shuck Amber/brown antron or z lon (short tuft)
  • Tying thread Gray thread (abdomen)
  • Poly yarn / Para Post wing White poly yarn (short upright tuft)
  • Superfine dubbing Gray or black superfine dubbing (thorax)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread at the eye and wrap a smooth base back to the bend.
  2. Tie in a short, sparse tuft of amber Zelon at the bend as a trailing shuck no longer than half the shank, then trim.
  3. Build a slim, slightly tapered abdomen forward with the tying thread to the 65% mark.
  4. Tie in a short tuft of white poly yarn standing upright at the 65% mark as a sighter/wing, posting the base with a few thread turns.
  5. Dub a small amount of gray superfine and figure-8 around the wing base to form a thorax that helps the fly ride low and stuck-in-the-film.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and add a tiny drop of cement; keep the whole fly sparse.
