Start the rusty orange thread on the wet fly hook and take it back to about the point of the hook — old wet flies like this stop the body there rather than carrying it round the bend.
Bring the thread back up close to the front and catch in the small gold wire.
Leave the thread at the back, put a good bit of wax on it, and pull some hare's mask dubbing out with a dubbing rake. Spin it on thin but long — long enough to carry the whole body in one go.
Wrap the slim dubbed body forward and stop at the front, leaving room for the hackle and head.
Wind the gold wire forward in about six evenly spaced turns on this size for the segmentation, catch it off at the front, and helicopter the excess off under thread tension rather than cutting a heavy wire with your scissors.
Take a couple of extra wraps to prepare the head area. Pull the lower fibers back on a small natural Partridge feather to make a tie-in point, catch it in by the tip with two or three wraps, fold it back with a couple more, and snip the tip out.
Grip the feather in hackle pliers and take two turns only — no more than that on a feather this size — sweeping the fibers slightly back but not hard back, for a spider look; pull any wayward fibers rearward and snip out ones you do not like.
Whip finish, pluck the leftover stubs at the eye with tweezers or touch them with a hot tool so tippet passes cleanly, and add a drop of head cement.
