Partridge and Hare's Ear

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook standard wet fly / soft hackle, 12-16
  • Thread tan 8/0

Materials

  • hare's ear dubbing Natural brown hare s mask dubbing (body and thorax)
  • fine wire Gold wire (optional rib)
  • grey partridge hackle Natural grey/brown hungarian partridge hackle (1-2 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread behind the eye and lay a base back to the bend.
  2. Optionally tie in fine gold wire at the bend for the rib.
  3. Dub a slim, slightly rough hare's ear body forward, leaving room at the head.
  4. If used, counter-wrap the gold wire rib in open turns and tie off.
  5. Build a slightly fuller hare's ear thorax at the front.
  6. Tie in a grey partridge feather by the tip and take 1-2 sparse turns, sweeping fibers back.
  7. Whip finish.
