Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 10-16
  • Thread to match body 8/0

Materials

  • Dry fly hackle Brown or grizzly hackle (1 feather)
  • Calf body hair (post/wing) White calf body hair (small clump)
  • Elk or moose hair (tail) Natural deer hair (small bunch)
  • Dry fly dubbing (body) To match (adams gray, yellow, etc.) (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and tie in an elk or moose hair tail one shank length long for the buoyant Wulff-style tail.
  2. Stand a white calf hair post at the 65% mark with criss-cross turns and a front thread dam.
  3. Dub a tapered body in the chosen color from the bend up to the post.
  4. Dub a small thorax in front of the post.
  5. Tie in the hackle at the post and wind 5-6 turns down the post, then secure.
  6. Sweep the fibers up, whip finish at the eye, and cement the post base.
