Parasol Midge

Reference Recipe

  • Hook curved scud/emerger hook, 18-24
  • Thread black or gray 8/0

Materials

  • Poly yarn parasol (post with yarn ball tip) White or hi-vis (1 pre-tied parasol)
  • Dry fly hackle Grizzly hackle (1 small feather)
  • Fine wire or thread (rib) Silver or contrasting fine wire thread (1 strand)
  • Tying thread / dubbing (body) Black or gray superfine dubbing (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thin thread base down the curved shank to the bend.
  2. Tie in a fine wire rib at the bend, then build a slim thread or lightly dubbed midge-pupa body forward to the 70% mark.
  3. Counter-wrap the wire rib forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns for segmentation and secure.
  4. Tie in the parasol post at the 70% mark, tip up, with criss-cross turns and a front thread dam; the little yarn ball keeps the post afloat and suspends the body in the film.
  5. Tie in a small grizzly hackle at the post and wind 2-3 sparse turns down the post, then secure.
  6. Sweep the fibers up, whip finish at the eye, and cement the post base.
