Tyer Recipe

  • Hook TMC 5262 (2X long, 2X heavy nymph hook), #8-12
  • Thread Pink (or to match the foam) 140 denier

Materials

  • 2mm foam sheet, two colors glued together Tan over peach (also yellow/tan, tan/brown) (One laminated sheet)
  • Sexy Floss (leg knots) Tan barred sexy floss (2 short lengths, small diameter)
  • Poly macrame yarn (wing) Tan antron (One clump)
  • Super glue - (One drop at the bend)

How to tie it

  1. Prep the foam ahead of time: glue two sheets of 2mm foam together with 3M Super 77 (Zap-A-Gap also works), press them flat under something heavy and let them dry. Ideally the day before.
  2. Cut the body from the laminated sheet with a 1-inch round Chernobyl-style cutter, cutting well in from the edge so the body is long enough, then square the front end off with a razor blade.
  3. Make the thighs: slice a long strip off the edge of the laminated foam and taper it to a point with a long-bladed pair of scissors. Tie an overhand knot of small barred Sexy Floss around the strip near the tip, snug it down at about 45 degrees, and trim the far tag. Reverse the knot direction to make a mirrored leg for the other side.
  4. Lay a smooth thread base from behind the eye back until the thread hangs even with the hook point, then put a small drop of super glue on the shank at the bend.
  5. Pinch the front end of the foam body flat so it will fold easily later, measure the rounded rear end about a half shank behind the bend, mark it with your thumbnail and set that mark on the glue. Lash it down with four turns one on top of the other, then square the foam so it sits straight on top of the shank.
  6. Shorten your working thread and form the extended body: cross the thread over the top of the foam behind the hook with vertical turns to make one segment, cross again for a second segment, and finish back on the shank.
  7. Lift the foam, advance the thread about a third of a shank forward, fold the foam back down onto the shank and lash it there to form the front body segment.
  8. Tie a clump of poly macrame yarn in at that point as the wing, reaching back to about the end of the extended body, and trim the butts.
  9. Set one thigh along each side at the wing tie-down so the legs kick out to the sides, and lock them in with tight wraps.
  10. Fold the remaining foam forward over the tie-down to form the head, lash it down behind the fold, trim the front to shape, whip finish under the head.
