Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 2XL, 8-14
  • Thread tan or yellow 6/0

Materials

  • Dry fly hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather)
  • Calf hair or poly yarn (post) White or hi-vis (small clump)
  • Elk or deer hair (wing) Natural deer hair (clump)
  • Dry fly dubbing or foam (body) Tan/yellow dubbing (pinch / strip)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Dub a fat, tapered tan-yellow body from the bend up to the 60% mark.
  3. Clean and stack a clump of elk hair; tie it in as a down wing over the body, tips just past the bend, and trim the butts to a short head.
  4. Bind a rubber leg on each side at the thorax, kicked out and back.
  5. Stand a hi-vis post at the 60% mark with criss-cross turns and a front thread dam.
  6. Tie in the grizzly hackle at the post and wind 5-6 turns down the post, then secure.
  7. Sweep the fibers up, whip finish at the eye, and cement the post base.
