Materials

  • Dry fly hackle Brown hackle (1 feather)
  • Calf body hair (post/wing) White calf body hair (small clump)
  • Elk or moose hair (tail) Natural deer hair (small bunch)
  • Peacock herl and red floss (body) Peacock/red herl and floss (2-3 herls, small amount floss)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and tie in an elk or moose hair tail one shank length long.
  2. Stand a white calf hair post at the 65% mark with criss-cross turns and a front thread dam.
  3. Build the royal body: wrap a peacock herl butt at the bend, then a band of red floss, then another peacock herl segment up to the post.
  4. Tie in the brown hackle at the post and wind 4-5 turns down the post, then secure.
  5. Sweep the fibers up, whip finish at the eye, and cement the post base.
