Dry Fly · Trout · Grayling · Intermediate · 2 versions

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 16-20
  • Thread Pale yellow 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Light dun hackle fibers (split)
  • Body PMD yellow dubbing (slender)
  • Post White calf hair (visible)
  • Hackle Light dun hackle (parachute)

How to tie it

  1. Mount hook, post a small clump of white calf hair at the 70% mark. Thread dam in front, 8-10 wraps up the base.
  2. Tie in split light dun tails at the bend.
  3. Dub a slender PMD-yellow body to the post. Thin noodle, gentle taper.
  4. Wrap a light dun hackle 3-4 turns down the post, parachute style. Tie off beneath.
  5. Whip finish at the head.

Substitutions

  • Body instead of PMD yellow dubbing: Pale yellow Superfine — Standard match; Sulphur yellow dubbing — Slightly warmer; Pale olive Superfine — Early season PMDs often have olive tint
  • Post instead of White calf hair: Hi-vis orange poly yarn — Much easier to see in riffles; White poly yarn — Easier to work with than calf
