Dry Fly · Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 2XL, 8-12
  • Thread yellow 6/0

Materials

  • Dry fly hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather)
  • Deer hair (body/wing) Natural deer hair (clump)
  • Poly yarn (post) Hi-vis (small clump)
  • Round rubber legs White or barred rubber legs (4 strands)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and tie in a clump of deer hair at the bend, tips extending back as the tail.
  2. Wrap thread forward over the deer hair butts to build a segmented body up to the 60% mark.
  3. Pull the remaining deer hair forward over the top as a bullet-head wing, bind it at the 60% point, and stand the trimmed butt tips up as the post; wrap a thread dam.
  4. Bind two rubber legs on each side at the thorax, splayed in an X, front pair angled forward and rear pair back.
  5. Tie in the grizzly hackle at the post and wind 4-5 turns down the post, then secure.
  6. Sweep the fibers up, whip finish behind the eye, and cement the post base and head.
