Terrestrial · Trout · Panfish · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 12-16
  • Thread black 8/0

Materials

  • Dry fly hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather)
  • Elk or deer hair (humpy shellback/post) Natural or black elk deer hair (small clump)
  • Dry fly dubbing Black dubbing (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a clump of elk hair at the bend, tips pointing back, then dub a rear ant ball over the butts.
  3. Pull the hair forward over the back to form a humped shellback, bind it at the 60% mark, and stand the remaining tips up as the post; wrap a thread dam to lock it vertical.
  4. Dub a smaller front ball in front of the post, leaving the ant waist.
  5. Tie in the grizzly hackle at the post and wind 4-5 turns down the post, then secure.
  6. Sweep the fibers up, whip finish at the eye, and cement the post base.
