Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 2x long, 8-14
  • Thread Tan 6/0

Materials

  • Body Tan dubbing or foam (robust)
  • Wing Natural elk hair (tent)
  • Post White poly yarn (visible)
  • Hackle Brown hackle (parachute)
  • Legs Knotted pheasant tail or rubber (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the long hook, post white poly yarn at the 70% mark.
  2. Build a robust tan body from the bend to the post.
  3. Tie in an elk hair wing, tent-style, tips to the bend.
  4. Add a knotted pheasant-tail leg on each side, knees up and out.
  5. Wrap brown hackle 4-5 turns down the post, parachute-style. Tie off beneath, whip finish.

Substitutions

  • Body instead of Tan dubbing or foam: Tan foam strip — More buoyant; Yellow dubbing — Standard hopper yellow
  • Post instead of White poly yarn: Hi-vis orange poly yarn — Better visibility against grass; White Aero Dry Wing — Floats better
  • Legs instead of Knotted pheasant tail or rubber: Barred rubber legs — More movement; Sili Legs (tan) — Excellent movement in current
