Parachute Green Drake

Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 1XL, 10-12
  • Thread olive 8/0

Materials

  • Dry fly hackle Grizzly dyed olive hackle (1 feather)
  • Poly yarn or calf hair (post) Dark dun elk or deer hair poly (small clump)
  • Moose or pheasant tail fibers (tail) Dark moose or pheasant tail fibers (3-4 fibers)
  • Dry fly dubbing Olive/green drake (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base and tie in three or four dark tail fibers at the bend, splayed slightly, about one shank length long.
  2. Stand a dark dun post at the 60% mark with criss-cross turns and a front thread dam.
  3. Dub a robust, tapered olive body from the bend up to the post; drakes are big, so build some bulk.
  4. Dub a thorax in front of the post as well.
  5. Tie in the olive-dyed grizzly hackle at the post and wind 5-6 turns down the post, then secure.
  6. Sweep the fibers up, whip finish at the eye, and cement the post base.
