Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 2XL, 8-12
  • Thread tan 6/0

Materials

  • Foam (body) Tan fly tying foam (1 strip)
  • Dry fly hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather)
  • Poly yarn (post/indicator) Hi-vis pink or orange (small clump)
  • Round rubber legs Tan/barred rubber legs (2-4 strands)
  • Elk hair (underwing) Natural deer hair (small clump)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base along the shank.
  2. Bind a tan foam strip at the bend and along the shank to form the underbody, leaving the tag end long to fold forward later.
  3. Tie in a small clump of elk hair as a down wing over the foam, tips to the bend, and trim the butts.
  4. Stand a hi-vis poly post at the 60% mark with criss-cross turns and a front thread dam.
  5. Knot or bind a pair of rubber legs on each side so they kick out at the thorax.
  6. Fold the foam forward over the top to form a segmented overbody, bind it down just behind the eye, and trim leaving a short head stub.
  7. Tie in the grizzly hackle at the post, wind 4-5 turns down the post, secure, sweep the fibers up, and whip finish.
  8. Cement the post base and thread head.
