Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 1XL, 10-14
  • Thread black 6/0

Materials

  • Dry fly hackle Black hackle (1 feather)
  • Calf body hair or poly yarn (post) White calf body hair (small clump)
  • Elk or deer hair (wing) Black-dyed elk hair (small clump)
  • Dry fly dubbing Black dubbing (pinch)
  • Round rubber legs Black ostrich herl (2 strands)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base from the eye to the bend.
  2. Stand a white post at the 65% mark with criss-cross turns and a front thread dam so it locks upright.
  3. Dub a fat, tapered black body from the bend up to the post.
  4. Bind a strand of black rubber leg on each side at the post base so the legs kick out and back a shank length.
  5. Clean and stack a clump of black-dyed elk hair; tie it in as a down wing over the body, tips reaching the bend, and trim the butts to a short head.
  6. Tie in the black hackle at the post and take 5-6 turns down the post, each below the last, then secure and clip the tip.
  7. Dub a small thorax, sweep the hackle up, whip finish, and add a drop of cement to the post base.
