Start the Tan Veevus 14/0 on the Daiichi 1180 and dub Natural Hare's Ear Dubbing on sparsely at first, just coating the thread, building it up as you work forward. Stop two thirds up the shank, a third of the way back from the eye.
Cut a small notch in the end of a Turkey Wing slip and bind it in as a down-wing so the tips hang just past the bend. A touch of superglue or Softex on the wing keeps it from falling apart, then trim the butt ends.
Stack White Calf Body Hair to even the tips and tie it in about one shank length long with a few tight wraps. Before letting go, sneak in with the scissors and cut the butts off behind the tie-in point.
Pull all the calf hair up, lay wraps in front of it, and take one big gathering wrap around the base of the post. Drop the thread down to the thorax and jump back up — that saves the work if you slip.
Tie a Whiting Grizzly High and Dry hackle in right in front of the post, draw it up and wrap it against the post, work back down, and trim out the stem.
Dub the same Hare's Ear over the thorax, sparse and slow, covering the wing butts and thread wraps front and back; rotate the vise to check you have covered everything, and add a smidgen more where you have missed.
Let the thread hang off the back side of the fly, start the hackle at the top of the post and creep slowly down it, freeing any fibers that get trapped as you go.
Creep the thread underneath the hackle, draw the fibers up, and lock the hackle with three tight, well-placed wraps; trim out the tip of the feather.
Whip finish with a long-reach whip finisher slipped in underneath the hackle, and put head cement under there.
