Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL dry-fly hook, 6-8
  • Thread yellow 6/0

Materials

  • Deer hair (tail) Natural deer hair (small clump)
  • Dry-fly dubbing Pale yellow/cream dubbing (pinch)
  • Poly yarn or calf hair (post) Dark gray poly yarn or calf hair (clump)
  • Dry-fly hackle 1 grizzly + 1 brown dry fly hackle (2 feathers)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and tie in a splayed deer-hair tail at the bend, about one shank length.
  2. Tie in an upright dark post at the 65% mark and collar its base so it stands tall.
  3. Dub a plump, lightly segmented pale-yellow body from the bend forward to the post.
  4. Tie one grizzly and one brown hackle in at the post, shiny side up.
  5. Dub a fuller thorax around the post base and up to the eye.
  6. Wind both hackles parachute-style in 5-7 turns for a big, buoyant footprint and tie off against the post.
  7. Whip finish at the eye and add a drop of cement, keeping it off the hackle.
