  • Hook standard dry-fly hook, 12-20
  • Thread black 8/0

Materials

  • Fine dry-fly dubbing Black dubbing (small pinch)
  • Calf body hair (post) White calf body hair (small clump)
  • Dry-fly hackle Grizzly hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and tie in an upright white calf-hair post at the midpoint, collaring its base to stand it up.
  2. Dub a shiny, rounded rear hump from the post back to the bend, building the ant's gaster.
  3. Tie a grizzly hackle in at the base of the post, shiny side up.
  4. Dub the front hump forward from the post to behind the eye, leaving a pinched waist under the post.
  5. Wind the hackle parachute-style around the post in 4-5 turns and tie off against the post.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and add a tiny drop of cement, keeping it off the hackle.
