Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry-fly hook, 14-20
  • Thread black 8/0

Materials

  • Fine dry-fly dubbing Black dubbing (small pinch)
  • Poly yarn (post) White poly yarn (small tuft)
  • Dry-fly hackle Black hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and dub a shiny, rounded rear hump (the gaster) over the back third of the shank.
  2. At the midpoint, tie in an upright white post and collar its base so it stands.
  3. Tie a black hackle in at the base of the post, shiny side up.
  4. Dub the front hump (the head) forward to behind the eye, leaving a pinched, bare waist between the two humps.
  5. Wind the hackle around the post parachute-style in 3-5 turns and tie it off against the post.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and add a tiny drop of cement, keeping it off the hackle.
