Panfish Scud

  • Hook curved scud/emerger hook, 12-16
  • Thread gray 8/0

Materials

  • Scud dubbing Gray-olive scud dubbing (small pinch)
  • Fine copper wire Copper wire (1 strand)
  • Scud back or clear stretch film Clear scud back thin skin (1 thin strip)
  • Micro fibetts Tan carapace (a few fibers)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and run a base around the curve to the bend.
  2. Tie in a few short tan fibett fibers at the bend for the tail, no longer than half a hook gap.
  3. Bind in the wire rib and a thin strip of scud back at the bend, both pointing rearward.
  4. Dub a plump, slightly tapered body forward over the whole curve to just behind the eye. Use half the dubbing you think you need, then pick it rough.
  5. Pull the scud back over the top as a shellback and bind it down behind the eye.
  6. Counter-wrap the wire forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns to segment the back, then helicopter off the tag.
  7. Pick out the dubbing underneath to suggest legs, whip finish, and cement.
