Set a size 14 caddis pupa or scud hook and start the olive UTC Ultra Thread 70 denier right behind the eye, running it down the shank and stopping short of the bend.
Tie in a strand of Flashabou — plain clear flash — as the body that will hang under the water.
Wrap the Flashabou so each turn almost touches the last, leaving just a little segmentation for a more realistic look, and only as far up the shank as the dubbing will start. Keep constant tension, tie it down tight and clip it off.
Bring the thread to about the hook point and tie the light olive Ultra Chenille in on top as the tail that sits on the surface, about the length of the hook if the hook were straightened.
Wax the thread, spin brown hare's ear dubbing directly onto it and wrap forward to cover the chenille tie-in and give the fly a buggy thorax.
Pinch a clump of elk hair, pull out all the fuzz and short fibres — combing if that is easier — then stack it so the tips are even. Measure it about the length of the tail.
Pinch the wing on with a couple of very loose wraps, then cinch it tight to hold it in place. Take about a third of the hairs and put a tight wrap on them, then another third, until it is all secured back at the hook eye.
Gather all the hair, pull it back and whip finish carefully — the whip finish is what holds this fly together — then clip the thread.
Pull the hair butts up and hold them slightly forward, then clip close to the eye for a neat head, rounding it off if it needs it.
Scrub the thorax with velcro to release the dubbing fibres so they stand out like caddis legs.
