Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-16
  • Thread Olive or tan 8/0

Materials

  • Ultra Chenille / Vernille (body) Olive or tan ultra chenille vernille (1 short length)
  • Deer or elk hair (wing) Natural deer hair (1 small bunch)
  • Peacock herl or dry-fly dubbing (head) Natural / dark peacock herl or dry fly dubbing (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Singe one end of a short length of Ultra Chenille to a tapered point (a lighter melts it to a fine tip).
  2. Tie the chenille along the shank at the 75% mark so the singed tip trails off the back about one shank length as the abdomen; bind it down firmly.
  3. Return the thread to the 75% mark.
  4. Stack a small bunch of deer hair and tie it in as a low downwing over the body, tips reaching the end of the trailing abdomen; trim the butts.
  5. Wrap a small peacock-herl or dubbed head in front of the wing butts.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and add a drop of cement.
