Set the Gamakatsu SL12S 1/0 in the vise, start the brown 210 denier Ultra Thread just behind the eye and run it back to just above the hook point; let the thread hang there.
Lay a straightened piece of Mason Hard Type Nylon - 20 lb along the near shoulder of the shank so it extends forward almost to the eye. Bind one side down, fold it round and bind back on the other side, leaving a loop wide enough for the foam stick to pull through — draw it out with the bobbin if it is short, feed it back from the tag end if it is long. Snip the butt section off.
Feed the Fly Foam 3mm - Red stick through the tail guard almost to the eye; it stretches a little as it goes. Take one solid wrap, then three more, then one wrap in front of them.
Strip the fibres from the end of the Ultra Chenille - Med Tan so it ties in without bulk, and bind it in just in front of the tie-in point and a little forward. Take one, two, three wraps to cover the thread wrap, then clip it in hackle pliers and set it aside.
Pull the front of the foam stick over the top, take one wrap, then bind it down working forward almost to the eye. Work back over it, then return to the front and stop.
Wrap the chenille forward three or four turns, tying it off on the underside, and cut it cleanly.
Finish the head. A slightly larger head than usual is fine here — the natural worm's head is a different colour from its body and that is what the fish key on. Whip finish and cut the thread.
Trim the foam tail to about two inches from its base against a paper gauge: cut a slight taper at the mark, then slice each corner off, adjusting if one side comes out longer than the other.
