Pale Morning Dun Thorax

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 16-18
  • Thread Pale yellow 8/0

Materials

  • Microfibbets or hackle fibers (tail) Dun microfibbets (few, split)
  • Dry-fly dubbing (body) PMD / pale yellow-olive (pinch)
  • Turkey flat or poly (wing) Light dun turkey flat or poly (1 upright tuft)
  • Rooster hackle Dun hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a few Microfibbets at the bend and split them into a wide V over a small dubbing ball for a stable, outrigger tail.
  2. Dub a slim tapered abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  3. Tie in a single upright wing of turkey flat or poly at the 65% mark and post the base.
  4. Tie in a dun hackle at the wing base, then dub a slightly heavier thorax around it.
  5. Wrap the hackle through the thorax, a couple of turns behind and a couple in front of the wing.
  6. Trim the hackle in a shallow V underneath so the body sits flush in the film, then whip finish and cement.
