Note: Contested against a published dressing: MISMATCH on the fly's construction. Cheech's Pablo's Sally is a foam-and-synthetics pattern on a light grub/scud hook: pale yellow Flex-Floss body over a yellow 2mm foam underbody, Ultra Dry Yarn wing, deer hair used as the LEGS, PMD dry-fly dubbing thorax, and no hackle at all. Materials

  • Dubbing (rear butt) Red ice dub (tiny pinch)
  • Dry-fly dubbing (body) Pale yellow dubbing (pinch)
  • Elk or deer hair (wing) Light / bleached elk or deer hair (1 small bunch)
  • Rubber or Sili legs Pale yellow / barred rubber legs (1 pair)
  • Rooster hackle Ginger / cream rooster hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Dub a small red butt at the bend to suggest the yellow sally's egg sac.
  2. Dub a slim pale-yellow body forward to the 70% mark.
  3. Stack a small bunch of light elk hair and tie it in as a downwing, tips reaching just past the bend; trim the butts.
  4. Tie a pair of pale legs along the sides at the wing base so a leg trails on each side.
  5. Tie in a ginger hackle and take three or four turns through the front of the body; secure and trim.
  6. Build a small head, whip finish and add a drop of cement.
